5 Best OBD2 Scanners for VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat (Tested on Real VAG Cars)
Published: November 24, 2024 · Last updated: May 29, 2026
Plenty of generic scanners read a VAG engine code just fine. Where most of them stop is the part you actually bought a VW or Audi to play with: long coding, adaptations, unlocking hidden features. These five all cross that line. They’ve been on VW, Audi, Škoda and SEAT cars in my garage, and they’re picked so there’s a sensible answer whether you want dealer-level depth or just the cheapest way to long code without a subscription eating you alive.
I earn from qualifying purchases and sometimes get tools for free (full disclosure). It never affects my scoring.

Real VAG OBD2 procedures
Below are some real diagnostic procedures performed on VW, Audi, Škoda and SEAT vehicles. These examples show what you can actually do with the scanners mentioned in this guide + some other options.
Why these five, and what each one is really for
VAG is one of the most rewarding brands to work on, because so much is unlocked with coding instead of new parts. The trick is picking a tool that actually does VAG coding on your generation of car, without bleeding you on credits or subscriptions afterwards. Here’s how these five split up.

The VCDS clone (or genuine version) is the value route to dealer-level VAG access. Full reach into every module, live data, service resets, the lot, and it’s genuinely easy to use once it’s running. It’s still my own go-to when I want to copy a coding value out of one module and write it into a replacement, like a steering wheel module after a clockspring swap. The one rough edge is setup: installing it on newer Windows can be a fight. Get past that and it’s a lot of capability for the money.

The OBDeleven 3 is the easy way in, straight from your phone. The VAG coding and adaptations are strong, the hardware is a step up from older versions, and it even reaches beyond VAG to some BMW, Toyota and Ford. Two things to know before you buy: it leans on a credit system and a subscription for the advanced stuff, so the cost creeps over time, and it’s at its best on VAG and only okay elsewhere. For an occasional VAG retrofit, it’s the friendliest tool here.

The Mucar 892BT is my main go-to scanner, VAG or not. It’s a tablet small enough to live in the glovebox, and the magnetic handle that holds the dongle on the back means I’m never hunting for it. Coding, adaptations, service resets, used-car checks, it handles the daily VAG work without subscriptions hanging over it, and it works on every other brand too. The one thing it still lacks is topology view, which may land in a later update. If you want one tool for everything and VAG is just part of it, this is the pick.

The Kingbolen Soloscan VAG solves the single most annoying VAG-scanner problem: it lets you long code without paying a subscription. If you only ever touch VW, Audi, Škoda and SEAT, the value here is hard to beat. The trade-off is right there in the name, it’s a one-brand tool. On anything outside VAG you get basic global OBD and nothing clever. Buy it knowing it’s a specialist, and it’s a bargain.

The Youcanic UCAN-II is the full-system all-rounder that also happens to do VAG well, and it runs completely offline once it’s set up. Full-system bidirectional, ECU coding, lifetime updates, and it logs live data nicely. The only real knock is that it’s a lesser-known brand with a smaller community, so when you hit a wall you’ll find fewer forum threads to lean on. A solid choice if you want VAG coding plus broad coverage in one box.

The job over the tool
Here’s the VAG-specific version of advice nobody selling these will give you: the most expensive tool isn’t automatically the right one. What matters is whether it does the coding you want on your exact generation of car, and what it costs you to keep doing it. A subscription tool that charges per coding session can cost more over two years than a one-time tool that does the same job. Work out the feature you’re chasing first, then buy the cheapest thing that does it without a meter running.
When I’d skip all of these
If all you ever do is read and clear a fault code on your VW, you don’t need any of this, a free OBDeleven account or the cheapest ELM327 and an app will cover you. And on the very newest cars, be realistic: SFD-locked modules on 2020-plus MQB-evo (Golf 8, new Octavia, A3 8Y) need an online unlock that most of these can’t provide, and SFD2 on 2024-plus isn’t crackable by any of them yet. If that’s your car, check what’s actually unlockable before you spend a cent.
Frequently asked questions
Can these scanner unlock SFD protection?
SFD1 on 2019+ models can be unlocked with OBDeleven and some of tablet scan tools (e.g. Autel IM608) but SFD2 on 2024+ models cannot be unlocked with any of these. Right now there isn't a way to unlock it except using ODIS and access to VW GRP server.
What is SFD/SFD2 protection?
VAG's security lock on the newest cars (MQB-evo, ~2020+ like Golf 8, new Octavia, A3 8Y). It blocks coding and adaptations on protected modules until they're unlocked online through VW's servers. Many tools can't get past it yet, so check your car before buying.
What is long coding and adaptations?
Two ways to change how a VAG module works. Long coding flips individual bits to turn features on or off (DRLs, mirror folding, lighting). Adaptations change a stored value (throttle learning, new battery, service intervals). Reading codes tells you what's wrong, these change something.
Can these scanners access long coding and adaptations?
Yes. Same like you know it from VCDS, the Mucar 892BT, Soloscan and Youcanic all do it. OBDeleven too, but you need the PRO plan for coding. Just mind the SFD note above on the newest cars.

Hello I have a 2000 Audi S6 avant wagon 4.2 v8. I’d like to know what is the process or scanner to use to code my clocksrping ,ie (cablereel) . I replaced the old one for a NEW unit I purchased from the local dealership. I was told it needs to be coded please help thank you in advance.
I did it for newer car by copying coding value from steering wheel module (16) and when I replaced it coding changed so I copy old value.
(I used VCDS)
Vcds is really expensive in my country, and obdeleven seems to have gotten more expensive and no longer offer lifetime long coding. Is there any other device that doesn’t need a subscription to long code for vw?
You can get not OEM cable on Aliexpress for about $30, they even help you install it if you need. Or I also use Mucar V07 but that was 320€ when I bought it on discount and it has 3 years free update but you don’t have to renew and it has long coding for VAG. (+ works on all brands)
Hi, I have a Skoda citigo and am trying to reach the ABS/brakes module to find the cause of an intermittent “ABS+Traction control warning”. I have a generic ELM327 that seems to only come back with OBD, ECU,TCU codes. Should I be going for the other OBD adapters or is it just software related ? I only need the trouble codes from the control units at the moment.
Yes for ABS bi-directional scanner is better. You can get OBDeleven free or xTool A30 or KIngbolen Ediag Elite those are fairly cheap and will do the job.
Hi,
Is Hex-V2 bidirectional? and what feature use that
yes it means it can activate components like door locks, lights, engine fan, etc… Depends which tests are stored in your car because every model comes with different set of tests
Hi! Which one would you reccomend for skoda Enyaq 2023(full electric) ?
Hi OBDeleven
I am planning to retrofit both a heated steering wheel and multi-color ambient lighting on my Audi A6 C8 2021. Is it possible to activate the heated steering wheel icon on the climate screen through long coding or adaptations alone, without writing/flashing a new XML file? Also, how can I enable the Multi-color Ambient Light menu for this retrofit?
Hi I would contact OBDeleven support to confirm. I am not sure if this can be done with coding, they will know.
