The Icarsoft CR Max is the budget pick that still handles quick diagnostics well. It’s especially good for used-car checks thanks to its mileage check function, which pulls odometer data fast across different control units. Bidirectional tests are its weak spot, support there is thinner than on the other tools in this list. It still has coding though, which is a real plus for one of the cheapest tablets here.

The XTool A30M is ultra budget, but that doesn’t mean it’s short on features, quite the opposite. It’s been my long-standing budget recommendation because it packs in features like more demanding service functions that you wouldn’t expect for the price. The one thing missing is coding for hidden functions.

The Thinkscan 689BT is another one of my favourites, it handles everything with room to spare. There’s also a wired version that offers largely the same capability for less than its sibling the Mucar 892BT Pro, just without topology and on a cable. That cable is actually a plus in its own right, it means less charging since it juices up every time it’s plugged into the car.
