Step-by-step procedure
Connect the Autel IM608 Pro 2 and navigate to Volkswagen > Automatic selection > Pre-Scan > 01 Engine Control Module 1 > Guided functions > 01 Particle filter service regeneration.
The tool runs two things under this function: it checks the event memory for regeneration-hindering entries, then runs the service regeneration itself.
📋 Test requirements before you start. Fuel tank fill level at least 1/4 full. Automatic transmission in position P, manual transmission in neutral. Parking brake set. Engine hood closed.
⚠️ Watch for translation bugs on this screen. If the tool’s interface is set to a language other than English, these requirement checks sometimes don’t register correctly and the function refuses to start even though the car meets every condition. Switch to English first if the guided function won’t launch.
The tool then asks two confirmation questions directly: is the manual gear in neutral, and is the selector lever in position P for automatic cars. Confirm the one that applies to your transmission.
Next it asks to confirm the parking brake is set. Answer Yes.
A safety instructions screen follows. It warns that exhaust temperature at the tailpipe can reach up to 300°C during emergency regeneration, with a duration up to 40 minutes. It also asks you to check whether an exhaust extraction system can be connected, or to run the test in an open area if not.
🔧 What happened on my check event memory screen. The tool reported no entries in the engine control module (J623) requiring a regeneration of the particulate filter, and asked “End test?”
⚠️ Press No here if you know the fault memory was cleared beforehand. A clean event memory doesn’t mean the filter is actually clean, it just means nothing is currently flagged as blocking the regen. If codes were wiped before you started, press No and continue with the forced regeneration anyway.
Once confirmed, the car raises engine RPM on its own to build exhaust temperature. The dash shows guided prompts through the process, and the tool logs live temperature readings before the turbocharger and before the DPF, along with a countdown timer and a running regeneration status.
⚠️ What actually happened on this job. After 15 minutes the tool cancelled the regeneration on its own, showing “Regeneration cancelled because high fuel temperature” with the cause listed as fuel temperature not in permissible range.
🔧 Why I didn’t rerun the function. After the cancellation I checked the ash load value in the live data, and it read 0.0. With the filter effectively clean, there was no real reason to force the regen again, so I left it there.
