How to Check Fuel Injectors on BMW 5 Series E61 530d (2008) with OBD2 Scanner
Smooth running control measurement lets you check whether all six injectors on the M57 engine deliver the correct amount of fuel at idle. It’s one of the fastest ways to spot a worn or leaking injector before it shows up as a fault code – and it’s available even on generic scanners with BMW special functions support.

| Prerequisites | Engine warm and at idle, no active fault codes affecting combustion, all electrical loads off |
Step-by-step procedure
- Connect the scanner to the OBD2 port located under the steering column on the driver side.
- Select Intelligent Diagnosis and let the scanner read the VIN.
- Wait for vehicle data to load.
- Open Special Functions (do not use Health Report or the standard System menu).
- Navigate: Powertrain → Digital Diesel Electronic (DDE) → Rough Running Measurement → Smooth Running Control.
- When the scanner asks whether there are fault codes for the smooth running regulator, select No.
- Continue to start the measurement.
- Read the compensation value for each cylinder in mg/stroke.
How to read the results
The scanner displays an acceptable range of -5 to +4 mg/stroke. In practice, healthy injectors should show values between -1 and +1 mg/stroke across all cylinders.
Values outside this tighter range do not automatically prove a faulty injector. The injector may be compensating for another underlying problem – vacuum leak, turbocharger issue, air intake leak, swirl flap problem or fuel pressure fault. Always rule out other causes before condemning an injector based on this test alone.
Additional Information & Compatibility Notes
Before using or purchasing any diagnostic tool for this procedure, always verify compatibility with your exact vehicle model, year and system configuration. Supported functions may vary depending on software version, hardware revision and regional limitations.
The smooth running control measurement is available on most BMW diesel engines using DDE control units, including M57, M57N and M57N2 engine variants. Access path and menu naming may differ slightly between scanner brands.
