iCarsoft CR Max Review: Strong ECU Coding and Mileage Checks, Mixed Resets

Published: August 18, 2025 · Last updated: June 4, 2026

The iCarsoft CR Max is a full-system bidirectional tablet with ECU coding and a long list of service resets. It sits between entry-level tools and semi-pro scanners: simple to use, covers many brands, good for someone who wants coding without specialized scanners like VCDS that works just for one brand. Where it stands out is used-car inspection: a one-tap mileage-verification function that pulls stored values from the modules for you. It’s solid, with one honest weak spot. Read on for what it does and where it slips.

What it’s actually good at

Used-car mileage verification is a real strength, and it makes inspections easier. Instead of opening every module by hand to hunt for stored mileage, you run one function and it pulls the values from across the modules for you. For checking a used car before buying, that turns a tedious manual job into a single tap, which is exactly what you want when you’re standing in a seller’s driveway.

VAG coding is advanced for the price. Long coding, adaptation and security login all worked without problems on my Golf. I changed the daytime running lights from headlights to fog lights by editing one byte, and it took effect immediately. You can unlock DRL, coming-home lights and similar, the kind of VCDS-style customisation that usually costs more, and here it works on other brands too.

The rest is solid and simple. Full-system scanning, live data in every module (with graphs, gauges, bars, recording), and bidirectional tests across body, engine and other modules, I fired the turn signals straight from the tool. The UI isn’t pretty but it’s functional and easy, and updates are free for life over Wi-Fi.

Where it falls short

The honest weak spot: service resets are hit and miss. It lists 49 of them, an impressive number, but the success rate is lower than other scanners I’ve used. Many didn’t work on some cars. When a reset works it works well, but you can’t count on all 49 landing on your specific car, so don’t buy it purely for the long reset count.

Bidirectional support is also a bit limited compared to similar tools, and VAG scan speed is slower than average. On my Golf the full scan took about three minutes, fine, but not fast.

A couple of smaller notes. The long-coding menu isn’t as easy as VCDS, you open each byte separately to see what it does, rather than getting a full helper from the start. And auto-scan is unreliable on older cars, so expect manual brand selection on anything pre-CAN.

Who should buy this

Yes, buy it if:

  • You do used-car inspections and want easy one-tap mileage verification across modules
  • You want VCDS-style VAG coding without paying VCDS money, and on other brands too
  • You want a simple, functional full-system tablet and don’t mind a plain interface

No, look elsewhere if:

  • You’re buying mainly for reliable service resets across many brands, the success rate here is patchy
  • You want the deepest bidirectional support or fastest VAG scans
  • You want the smoothest coding experience, the long-coding layout trails VCDS
How it compares?

→ Mucar V07, smoother UX and a stronger all-round tool, with more reliable service work. If you want a nicer day-to-day experience and don't specifically need the CR Max's mileage feature, it's the better pick. The comparison shows the gap.

Still deciding rather than chasing a CR Max deal? I line up the full-system tablets I’ve tested in my [best bidirectional OBD2 scanners] roundup. The short version: the CR Max is a strong used-car and VAG-coding tool, but the roundup shows where a Mucar, a Kingbolen or a Youcanic fits your work better.

Final word

The iCarsoft CR Max is a straightforward full-system tablet with strong VAG coding and a handy mileage-verification feature that makes it a useful used-car inspection tool. The catch is the service resets: 49 listed, but a lower success rate than rivals, so it’s not the one to buy purely for resets. When it works, it works well, and for used-car checks and VAG coding without VCDS money, it’s a good option.
