Best OBD2 Scanners for Airbag Reset (and When OBD Won’t Fix It)

For most airbag light resets and clearing crash data after a repair, a full-system scanner does the job over OBD, the XTool IP900BT and Autel IM608 both handle this. But if the airbag module itself is locked, deployed, or the fault won’t clear through the OBD port, you’re not fixing it with a scanner anymore, you need a bench programmer like the Carprog II clone to read or write the module directly. Why OBD doesn’t always fix an airbag fault
Most airbag reset guides online treat this as one job. It isn’t.
Clearing a stored DTC and repairing an actual fault are two different things. If the airbag module itself flags an internal fault, a locked EEPROM, or crash data from a deployment, the OBD port often can’t touch it. The scanner talks to the module over the same protocol either way, but if the module’s internal memory is the problem, no amount of clearing over OBD rewrites what’s actually stored inside the chip. That’s when the job moves off the car and onto a bench.

🔧 Real Field Case. VW Passat B5, SRS light on constantly, airbag module throwing a control module fault that wouldn’t clear no matter how many times I reset it. Turned out to be exactly the kind of fault that could be handled purely over OBD, no bench work needed. Ran the reset with the XTool IP900BT and the fault cleared for good, light stayed off.
That’s the case for owning a proper full-system scanner first. Most airbag faults you’ll actually run into are solvable this way. But it’s not every fault, and knowing the difference before you buy a tool saves you from assuming a $500 scanner will fix something only a bench programmer can touch.
The Autel IM608 covers the same OBD-side airbag work as the IP900BT, with the added benefit that it’s also my main diagnostics and key programming tool. If you only want to own one device that handles airbag resets alongside everything else, this is the one I’d point you to. The tradeoff is price, it costs several times what a dedicated scanner does.
When OBD genuinely can’t reach the fault, that’s where the Carprog II clone comes in. It’s an EEPROM and MCU programmer, not a scanner, it reads and writes chips directly off the module once it’s out of the car. I’ve used mine on a Passat B6 instrument cluster EEPROM, not on an airbag module specifically yet, so I can’t give you a first-person airbag story with it. What I can tell you is it’s built for exactly this category of work, reading locked module memory a scanner can’t reach, and it’s cheap enough that it’s worth having in the drawer before you need it.

The job over the tool: before you buy anything here, try the reset over OBD first. It’s free, it’s fast, and it fixes most cases. Only reach for a bench programmer once you’ve confirmed the fault survives a proper OBD clear attempt.
