However, keep in mind that mileage detection with an OBD2 scanner does not work on every car. Some vehicles store mileage data in multiple ECUs, while others only store it in the instrument cluster.
Why mileage verification requires a full system scanner
When checking mileage with an OBD2 scanner you are not reading the value from the dashboard.
Instead, you are searching for mileage records stored inside different control modules.
Common modules where mileage data may appear include:
- engine ECU
- ABS module
- infotainment system
- gateway module
- transmission ECU
- body control module
If the mileage stored in one of these modules is significantly higher than the dashboard value, it may indicate that the odometer was rolled back.
