I tested a lot of Bluetooth OBD2 scanners

I tested 20+ Bluetooth OBD-II scanners to come up with this list, so I am not just randomly slapping a few scanners on the table.

I tested these scanners on multiple vehicles and some I have used for more than 2 years already (for example I always carry Thinkdiag2 in my glovebox if needed a professional tool on the roads).

Here are a few interesting things I found out while testing them 🙂

ELM327 vs J2534 adapter

These are ELM327 adapters and they have one big advantage. There are hundreds of OBD-II apps in your app store you can use with your one adapter.

For ECU coding, reading/clearing faults, tracking performance or location data, or checking specific parts of your car like the DPF filter.

There are apps for a lot of things and I suggest you get yourself at least 1 cheap ELM adapter to use with these various apps.

However, for some serious work, the J2534 is a better choice.

J2534 adapter will let you access all modules to scan codes, and live data and even save and log these data parameters to review later.

They also have built-in service procedures like DPF reset, oil service reset, brake pad reset, etc… and some of them have ECU coding as well.

xTool A30 is the best value for the money

All of us DIY mechanics are mostly looking for tools that can do a lot without having to pay a subscription, any kind of yearly fee, or a high initial price.

Xtool A30 is the perfect response.

Bi-directional testing, service procedures, full code & data scan with data logging and all of that with free lifetime updates.

Thinkdiag2 is the most advanced

Thinkdiag2 is actually the most advanced scanner on this list.

Same as xTool A30 it is bi-directional, can do full code & data scan with logging in all control modules, and has service procedures.

On top of that, you will also get access to ECU coding (unlocking hidden features by coding menu with scanner) and it comes with even bigger vehicle coverage of about 115 car brands.

Vgate iCar PRO 2S is great value for money

Vgate Icar PRO 2S is a great budget ELM327 adapter that works straight out of the box and you will have hundreds of OBD2 apps available to use.

These apps may not be as advanced as software in Xtool or Thinkdiag2, but you have access to a lot of them and some of them specialize only one one specific procedure or data set.

Topdon Topscan is great for a used car check

Topdon topscan is also a J2534 adapter that is very capable of helping you diagnose & solve your car issues.

However, I liked using it for used car checks (I do these on the side to earn extra cash) and I loved topscan for its PDF reports which are even customizable and you can include your own pictures you take with your phone.

With this cheap scanner, I was able to deliver professional vehicle reports to my customers for used car checks.

xTool AD20 Pro

XTool AD20 PRO is not that much tool for diagnosing your car problems, but more of a someone that keeps an eye on your car if you are completely clueless about vehicle maintenance.

It can do a full scan and it warns you about possible problems to avoid expensive problems caused by ignoring or not knowing a symptom.

I don’t like it for some DIY mechanic work, but might be a good tool to put in your wives and girlfriends’ vehicles 🙂

OBDLink MX+ is king of ELM327

OBDLink MX+ is the best ELM327 adapter you will find. It also comes with its own smartphone app + windows app (it works with a laptop as well), and then you can use all of the OBD2 apps from your app store as well.

The question is if you need the OBDLink+

If you plan on tracking performance data, doing some POV driving with data like RPM and Speed overlay and you need something to capture them quickly OBDLink is gold.

It is also good to use with apps like Carista for ECU coding (unlock hidden features).

But for diagnosing & servicing cars, you might as well just buy a combination of ELM + J2534 for the same price.

Instead of OBDLink MX+, you can buy topscan + icar pro 2s, or xTool A30 + xTool AD20 Pro.

Kdiag is the cheapest Bi-Directional Bluetooth scanner

Konwei Kdiag is the cheapest Bi-Directional scanner that actually comes without a subscription.

It can access all modules, read data and codes from all modules, do bi-directional testing, and even some service procedures.

But it has low vehicle coverage (about 40 brands) so check compatibility before you get it.
