What to Think About Before Buying an OBD2 Scanner for Jeep / Chrysler / Dodge / RAM

If you’ve got a Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, or RAM, you probably noticed how picky these cars are with scanners. Some tools only read engine codes, while others talk to every module in the car — transmission, ABS, airbag, BCM, even key programming.

Before you buy, there’s one big thing you need to understand: the Security Gateway.


? Security Gateway (SGW) – What It Is and Why It Matters

Starting around 2018, Chrysler added a Secure Gateway Module (SGW) to protect the car’s internal network from hacks or unauthorized access.

Basically, the SGW acts like a firewall between the OBD port (the part you connect your scanner to) and the rest of the car’s systems. It splits the network into two parts:

  • Public side: telematics and OBD port
  • Private side: all the important vehicle modules (ECU, ABS, transmission, etc.)

Without proper access, most scanners can only read basic data. To write data (clear codes, run actuator tests, or perform adaptations), you’ll need authentication through Chrysler’s licensed devices or a bypass cable.

So, what does that mean for you?

  1. Get the JScan app on your phone.
