XTOOL D5S TESTED | Honest Review
Last Updated on April 11, 2026 by Juraj
I tested the XTOOL D5S on my Mazda and used it for engine, airbag, and service functions. This is a multi-system scanner, meaning it sits between a simple engine code reader and a full bi-directional scan tool. After updates and real testing, it proved more advanced than typical multisystem tools.

The D5S is a multi-system scanner. Not a full-system scanner. Not a coding tool. Not a workshop-grade tablet.
It is meant for DIY users who want:
• more modules than engine-only tools
• better live data
• some service procedures
• a clear tablet interface
• stable auto-scan
It fills the gap between OBD-only Bluetooth tools and bi-directional tablets like VO7 or D7.
Test Results on Real Cars

I tested it on a Mazda.
Cars used
• Mazda (no ABS / no AT module installed) / Skoda rapid
Setup and Updates

When unboxed, it was already charged.
Updating all brands took about one hour.
Once updated, it worked instantly.
Module Scan
Mazda had only engine and airbag modules installed.
D5S correctly detected both and scanned them without errors.
If your car has ABS, transmission, or more systems, D5S will scan those too.
Fault Codes

In engine control module:
• found more codes than the OBD-only menu
• showed 3 engine codes instead of one
That’s the main advantage of multisystem tools.
In airbag module:
• scanned correctly
• displayed proper SRS fault list
Live Data
Live data inside ECM showed about 60 parameters, compared to 21 parameters in OBD-only mode.
You can:
• view values
• open graphs
• create custom live-data pages (4 values per page)
Graphing worked smoothly.
Demand Self-Test
This feature tests relays, fuses, and system responses.
D5S ran the test and produced several CAN-related fault codes.
Useful for diagnosing electrical issues.
Clear Faults
Check engine light cleared successfully.
SRS clearing depends on the car – some modules allow clearing, some require fixed hardware.
Reporting
PDF report is clean and simple.
