This guide shows how to permanently turn off the seatbelt warning chime and lamp on a VW Passat B7 through the instrument cluster long coding.

I earn from qualifying purchases and sometimes get tools for free (full disclosure). It never affects my scoring.

Procedure typeCoding
DifficultyEasy
Time required~5 min
PrerequisitesOBD2 scanner with access to long coding

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Plug the scanner into the OBD port and switch the ignition on. Engine off.
  2. Select the vehicle and enter the control unit list.
  3. Open module 17 Instrument Cluster.
  4. Go to Long Coding.
  5. Find the seatbelt warning parameter in the coding list.
  6. Change the value from yes to no.
  7. Write the coding to the module.
  8. Ignition off, wait around 30 seconds, ignition back on.
  9. Verify: no chime and no belt lamp with the belt unbuckled.
⚠️ Don’t do this

don’t go looking for this in Adaptation. The Passat B7 cluster has four seatbelt warning variants in adaptation channels, and none of them switches the warning off completely. They only change the type of warning you get. I went through all four before I realised the actual off switch lives in long coding, not adaptation.
