Motopower MP69033 code reader: OWNER’S REVIEW

Motopower mp69033

Motopower MP69033 is one of the cheaper code readers, has a big screen and at some point, it was best selling code reader I believe. Is it that good or should you look for some other brand? Find out in my review.

Motopower MP69033 – Quick Overview

Motopower MP69033

It has a bigger screen than other code readers, but it didn’t work on one of my cars (kangoo diesel) and also displayed only very little live data as a graph.

I had some issues with it but users from the USA seem to love this code reader + it is also the cheapest code reader I see on Amazon.

My experience with MP69033

Motopower MP69033

Here I am testing it on my Corolla 2022 and it seems to work great, it reads codes and has a very big screen which makes it easier to read than other code readers.

It even supports live data graphs but it shows way fewer values than some of the other code readers.

I tested a lot of code readers

I am constantly testing new code readers and here is a page I regularly update with the best engine code readers.

Motopower did not work on all cars

A long time ago I tried it on a 2004 Renault and just a few days back I tested it on my old 1998 Passat which is a challenge for some scan tools 🙂

Motopower unfortunately was not able to connect.

Code Reader vs. Other OBD2 Scanners (Why You May Want More Than This Tool)

Basic handheld code readers are reliable and easy to use, but they are also very limited. They can read & clear only engine fault codes and show basic live data.
For older vehicles, that’s often enough — but for modern cars, it becomes a problem.

Where simple code readers fall short

Modern cars have 20–100 control modules, not just the engine. With a basic reader, you cannot access:

  • ABS / Airbag / Transmission fault codes
  • Battery, brake, injector, DPF, throttle and other service resets
  • Live data from other modules (ABS sensors, transmission temperature, etc.)
  • Bi-directional tests (fan tests, actuator tests, EVAP tests, fuel pump tests…)
  • ECU coding / adaptations for unlocking hidden features
  • Used-car checks like real mileage stored in modules

So while basic code readers “work,” they often don’t give you the information you actually need to diagnose a real issue on a modern car.

Better Alternatives (Same Price, 10× the Features)

bidirectional scanners

Today, you can get a Bluetooth bi-directional scanner for almost the same price as a simple code reader — but with full-system diagnostics and service functions.

Or Go Straight to a Diagnostic Tablet

Yes, diagnostic tablets look expensive at first — but they often include:

  • Full-system scanning
  • Bi-directional tests
  • ECU coding
  • Service resets for brakes, battery, throttle, DPF, etc.
  • Lifetime updates on many models (Thinkcar / Mucar)

If you plan to keep your car long-term or help friends/family, a tablet often pays for itself in 1–2 repairs.
