P0102 Mass or Circuit Airflow (MAF) Circuit Low Voltage Input means that your MAF sensor is sending lower voltage than the acceptable range. That can be caused either by a faulty MAF sensor, or its wiring, but also by other components like the O2 sensor or a stuck EGR valve.
P0102 quick overview
Meaning | P0102: Mass Airflow (MAF) Circuit Low Voltage Input |
Is it serious? | This code isn’t immediately critical but can cause poor engine performance, stalling, and reduced fuel efficiency. |
Possible causes | -Faulty MAF sensor -Dirty or clogged air filter -Vacuum leak -Wiring issues (e.g., damaged or corroded wires) -Faulty PCM (rare) |
How to diagnose? | Check MAF Sensor: Inspect the MAF sensor for dirt or damage, clean it if necessary. Inspect Air Filter: Ensure the air filter is clean and not clogged. Check Wiring: Inspect the wiring to the MAF sensor for damage or corrosion. Test Sensor: Use a multimeter to test the MAF sensor’s voltage output. Check for Vacuum Leaks: Inspect for any vacuum leaks in the intake system. Examine PCM: If other steps don’t resolve the issue, consider checking the PCM for faults. |
P0102 Meaning
The MAF sensor acts like a scale that measures how much air is going into your engine. If it’s not working properly, your car’s computer might not give the engine the right amount of fuel, leading to poor performance. Fixing this can help your car run smoothly again. |

P0102 case study: fixes that Worked!
The code P0102 is for the MAF sensor, but don’t rush to replace it without further diagnosis. If you have the P0102, the probability of a bad MAF sensor causing this is around 50% according to this short study. Here are some key takeaways from the study.
- Check if EGR isn’t stuck open before replacing MAF
- Check if the PCV valve isn’t stuck open before replacing MAF
- Check if there isn’t any gasoline/oil in your intake before replacing MAF
- Scope the MAF, if the signal is getting to the PCM, the fault can be in the computer
- PCM/PCM wiring or update is often faulty when the problem is intermittent based on climate changes
- Check O2 sensors (live data and circuits)
P0102 Volkswagen
Car: 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio GL 2.0L
Problem: Poor Idle Quality, Hesitation, Stall, code P0102
Fix: Customer complains that it runs well cold but will die when the engine is hot but restarts immediately. The MAF sensor replacement fixed the issue.
P0102 Kia
Car: 2002 Kia Sedona EX 3.5L
Problem: Check engine light, P0102
Fix: Voltage from the MAF sensor to PCM would drop to 1V and stay there regardless of what is happening. Only tapping on the sensor caused some noticeable change in engine performance so the technician decided to change the sensor for an aftermarket unit. Didn’t work until the MAF sensor was changed for the OEM KIA unit.
P0102 Chevrolet
Car: 1996 Chevrolet C1500 Cheyenne 4.3L
Problem: Poor Idle Quality, Hesitation, Surge, Cuts out, Stall, MIL Lamp on, P0102,
Fix: The power to the Mass Air Flow sensor is from the Engine 1 Fuse (20Amp) which feeds the MAF, EGR valve, PCM Pin 2, Camshaft sensor, and all 3 upstream O2 sensors. If you replace the fuse with all 3 O2 sensors unplugged and the fuse does not blow, plug in one O2 sensor at a time until the fuse blows. The technician followed this procedure and was able to find a short in one of the O2 sensor’s circuits. Fixed by repairing the O2 wiring.
P0102 BMW
Car: 2001 BMW X5 3.0i 3.0L
Problem: Poor Idle Quality, Cuts out, Stall, MIL Lamp on, P0102
Fix: The technician started with the battery and charging system and looked for vacuum leaks. All of that was fine, so he looked in the idle control valve before replacing the expensive MAF. He cleaned the ICV which seems to improve the situation a little, so he replaced it with a new unit which fixed the vehicle.
P0102 Volvo
Car: 2002 Volvo S40 1.9L
Problem: P0102, engine fan runs constantly if engine/ignition OFF
Fix: The technician looks first into CTS (coolant temperature sensor) and A/C pressure switch as they could be causing weird cooling fan behavior. Unplugging these sensors didn’t change anything but all problems went away with the new MAF sensor.
P0102 GMC
Car: 2006 GMC Sierra 2500 HD SLT 6.6L (Diesel)
Problem: No Start, Poor Idle Quality, Stall, MIL Lamp on, P0102
Fix: P0102 usually means the signal is dropping out usually because of intermittent poor connection or chafed wire. But this time the code was set by sticking open the EGR valve. Fixed by putting new EGR.
P0102 Buick
Car: 2002 Buick Park Avenue 3.8L
Problem: Cuts out, MIL Lamp on, P0102
Fix: There were actually 2 issues causing this code simultaneously, the first was the MAF connection to the PCM. The wiring had to be repaired and the MAF sensor replaced. The aftermarket unit didn’t work, code went away only with the OEM-used sensor from another car.
P0102 Saturn
Car: 2000 Saturn LW2 3.0L
Problem: MIL Lamp on, P0102
Fix: Not really that much information was provided by the technician, he came to the conclusion that MAF has to be bad, and indeed the new unit fixed the issue.
P0102 Ford
Car: 2007 Ford F-150 XLT 4.2L
Problem: MIL Lamp on, P0102
Fix: Technician started with MAF sensor wiring as the MAF and coolant temperature sensor values were showing weird values very close to 0. The wiring was tested OK, and the problem was the faulty engine computer (PCM).
P0102 Toyota
Car: 1997 Toyota Corolla 1.6L
Problem: MIL Lamp on, P0102
Fix: With the P0102 problems, don’t forget to also check engine live data fuel trims, and oxygen sensor data. This Toyota had an oxygen sensor that wasn’t switching at all and the trouble code went away with replacing the O2 sensor.
